The Importance of Reading the Bible Daily
James Tollett – September 23, 2011

As believers we know it is important to read the Bible devotional on a daily basis.  In fact, we are all familiar with Paul’s words to Timothy,

“15 And that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”  2 Timothy 3:15-17 NASB

However, knowing that we should read the Bible and doing it are two different things. In this short Believer’s Tip of the Week, I want to give you some reasons to read the Bible.

As you read the Bible devotionally:

  • Your knowledge of the basic content of the Bible will grow.

  • You will be able to start applying the revelation of God’s Word to all areas of your life.

  • You will be able to share the results of your Bible reading with the world.

  • And most importantly, God will once again be communicating to you through His written word, the Bible.

Now, all of us have set out at one time or another to read the Bible through in one year.  We normally attempt to do this around the first of the year.  Unfortunately, by the middle of January or early February, we have stopped our reading program.  The reason, we got behind in our reading is because we tried to read too much too soon.  We tried to read too many chapters each day. But I want to encourage you to begin reading the Bible again.

Let me suggest that for this next read you read one chapter in the Old Testament and one chapter in the New Testament each day of the week.  This will get you back into the practice of reading God’s Word.  I promise you, God has something there He wants to share with you.

In next week’s "Believer’s Tip of the Week," I will be sharing with you how to develop a reading plan that will work for the rest of your life.
