Don’t Forget the Thank-You Card
James Tollett – January 12, 2012

As an evangelist, you did your work to schedule a meeting at a local church.  You have spoken at the meeting.  The meeting went well.  That meeting is over and you are on your way to the next appointed meeting.  DON’T BLOW IT NOW—send a Thank-You card to the pastor within three days of closing that meeting.

Thank you card

As an evangelist, one of the things you must do is build good relationships with local pastors.  You do this before you schedule a meeting, as well as when you attend a fellowship meeting or a pastor’s conference.  You are building relationships when you send promotional material, or when you follow-up on the delivery of that material with a phone call to that local pastor.   While you are at the church, you do all you can to further develop a relationship with the pastor.  But if you want to be invited back to that church, don’t forget to send a Thank-You card.  (Instead of a card, you could send a “Thank You” letter, but I have found that cards work better.)

A Thank-You card allows you to show appreciation for the way the church took care of you while you were there.  In that card be sure to mention any food and housing that were provided.  If there were any special things that were done for you during the meeting, also mention those.  If a certain person in the congregation took care of your needs, give that person praise in this card.  Also, thank the church for the offering.  Be sure you conclude your Thank-You card with something very positive about the host pastor.

This may not seem like an important matter to you, but it is.  Your Thank-You card is a way to express your appreciation and to continue to build relationship with that pastor after the meeting.  Conclude your comments on the card by also mentioning that you will be praying for the church and the pastor.

You can find Thank-You cards at most stationery stores, office supply stores, Christian bookstores, or even at Wal-Mart.  I suggest you get a standard size card—about the size of a standard Christmas card.  Make sure the inside of the card is blank.  The content within the Thank-You card and the information on the envelope need to be handwritten.  Nothing says more to a person than a handwritten note.

Once you locate a Thank-You that card you like, buy a number of them to have on hand.  I normally keep a stock of at least twenty-five cards.

Do not neglect to send this Thank-You card, as it is just one more way to continue to build relationship with a pastor and his church.

Until next week, I am James Tollett, you missionary evangelist to America.
